Winter Activities

If there is a moral value for which the Vietnamese unanimously agree, it is that of the term "Humanity". But in the senses that we know in France, the customs and uses, coming from the kingdom of the Dragon, have included "Exchange and Sharing".

Foodstuffs. Thus, in less than a decade, in the mountainous regions of the North and the Centre, where the winters are becoming increasingly harsh, groups of young people of friends have been formed to help the minorities cope with the cold. On weekends, they leave by night bus or night train to distribute basic foodstuffs: dehydrated noodles, salt, oil, etc., before returning to Hanoi the next day to resume work straight away.

Woolens. In the northern province of Hà Giang, in Lung Cu, a spear stuck in Chinese territory, the local population is cross-border, living straddling the two countries depending on the climatic conditions. When it is too cold, some will take refuge where they will be safe. Thus, woolen gifts are much more valuable than money in helping them settle in place. In winter, when the weather is nice, idle men gather on the hill, sit on the rocks, amuse themselves by watching the cars pass, to kill boredom and by betting on the last number of the license plate, even or odd, of the next passing car.

Overcome boredom. In winter, when the weather is nice, idle men gather on the hill, sit on the rocks, distract themselves by watching the cars go by, and to overcome boredom, they make bets on the last digit of the license plate, even or odd, of the next passing car. The day before the Sunday market day, the women cut up the young corn stalks, scrape out the "marrow" to make a pot of "chè" (sweet dessert) more bland than sweet she sell for two thousand dongs (0.10 euros). It is also an opportunity for them to be flirtatious, adorning themselves in their traditional outfit whose shimmering colors brighten up the teeming square where the uniformity of black and dark blue of male outfits dominates.

November 2009. A particularly deadly winter causing the death of old people and infants, even in the Red River plain where the temperature is less cold than in the mountains. On the road from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay, tourists we knew saw cows collapse due to lack of stables. In addition, at the same time in the province of Hoa Binh, a violent typhoon blew away residential chalets and three nurseries in Maï Châu. Cora granted us exceptional assistance to build three new establishments in January 2010.

Frozen joy. Mr. Bang and we are setting up a long tour to distribute duvets, woolens and hats, and basic food supplies. In areas inaccessible by car, our man goes on foot to distribute plastic sheeting which delights the frozen people. Enveloping the body and tied around the neck with a terry towel, they gradually create a saving “greenhouse effect”. Joy frozen by the cold.

In Hanoi, we are financing a meal distribution campaign by an association of young people active in social protection centers for elderly people without families.

Distribution Campaigns

September 2009: Vinaes organizes a distribution tour of duvets, woolens and hats in the two provinces of Hà Giang and Diên Bien Phu under the leadership of the tireless Mr. Bang

That year, Mr. Bang never traveled so far to make his distributions without forgetting his ephemeral toys.
